Mary Rita (McDonough) Young passed away in Melrose on May 24, 2017 at the age of 91. Mary was born in Portland, Maine on February 23, 1926 to the late James & Nora (Lee) McDonough. She was raised in Portland, Maine, graduated from Cathedral High School in 1942 where she was the Valedictorian. Prior to marriage Mary worked for the Maritime Commission in South Portland during WWII. She was a founding member of Massachusetts Citizens for Life and worked at the Value of Life Committe. Mary has been a Melrose resident since 1989, was a member of Our Lady of Presentation Church Sodality in Newton and St. Mary's Church Ladies Sodality here in Melrose. She enjoyed spending time at the Milano Center in Melrose and was a member of the Golden Girls Bridge Club. Mary was Beloved wife of the late Robert J. Young. Loving mother of Michael W. Young & his wife Diane of Saugus, Kathleen R. Rafter & her husband Eugene of FL, Mary Agnes Burke of Melrose, Teresa Y. Goulding & her husband Christopher of Melrose, Dr. Stephen A. Young & his wife Danielle of FL, Meredith E. Branagan & her husband Peter of Hingham, Brian J. Young & his wife Laura of CA and the late Robert J. Young Jr. Sister of Anne Rowe of Falmouth, ME and the late Edward McDonough, William McDonough and James McDonough. Grandmother of Christopher Young, Erin Rafter, Colleen (Rafter) Atlas, Gregory Goulding, John Patrick Burke, Caitlin (Young) Sweet, Rebecca Burke, Nicole, Melissa & John Branagan, Matthew & Sean Young. Great grandmother of Juliette Sweet & Henry Atlas. Also survived by numerous nieces & nephews. Visitation will be held at the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Monday, May 29, 2017 from 4:00-8:00PM and again on Tuesday morning from 8:30-10:00AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church, Herbert St. Melrose at 10:30AM. Interment at Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose. Relatives & friends are respectfully invited to attend.
