Donald Smith, of Malden, died at the Saugus Center in Saugus on Dec. 28, 2017 at the age of 83. Donald was born & raised in Melrose and attend Melrose schools. After high school, he went on to serve his country in the U.S. Air Force for 4 years. Donald worked as a Custodian for the City of Melrose at the Melrose High School for many years until his retirement at the age of 65. He also worked as a Crossing Guard at the Salemwood School in Malden for several years. Mr. Smith resided in Melrose until 1967 and the past 50 years in Malden. Donald enjoyed crossword puzzles, watching TV and his family was the most important part of his life. He was the beloved husband of Mary (Wells) Smith for over 50 years. Loving father of Christopher M. Smith of Malden. Caring brother of Anna McClure & her late husband Thomas of FL and the late William "Buddy" Smith & his late wife Claire. Also survived by several nieces, nephews, relatives & friends. Visiting hours will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Thursday, Jan. 4th from 4-7PM, followed by a Funeral Service at 7PM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited to attend. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
